Dirt Cheap is a demolition contractor working in Newberry, South Carolina, and across Newberry County. Newberry is an old mill town, and the building stock shows it. Around Oakland Mill village and the Mollohon village blocks, plenty of small frame mill houses are past saving. Some have sat empty for years. Some burned. Owners downtown near the Opera House deal with tired store buildings and old church property. Out past the city limits the county turns to farmland and pine. Barns lean, poultry houses go quiet, and double wides age out on family land. All of it has to come down before anything new goes up. That is the work we do. We run full-size excavators and dozers on Newberry jobs.
Dirt Cheap is a family business out of West Columbia, with our own crew on the equipment every day. Newberry sits about 40 miles up I-26 from our shop, so it is a short run for our trucks. The main work is pulling old mill houses and tired double wides off the lot. We also clear the pines and brush off a raw tract and grade building pads. We put in gravel drives, pour concrete flatwork, and set new septic systems. Estimates are free. Call (803) 796-4727 and tell us what is standing on the property.
Tell us about the structure, lot or job and we will get right back to you.
The mill villages carry a lot of it. Frame worker houses went up around the Newberry Cotton Mills village between the 1880s and 1910. Mollohon village housing followed in 1901, with a second round in 1924. Oakland Mill went up between 1910 and 1912, and its village grew around it. A hundred years later some of those houses are fixed up and some are worn out. A mill house looks small from the road. The brick chimney, the piers, and decades of add-ons still make it a real teardown. We take the structure to the dirt, pull the footings, and fill the hole so the lot sits flat.
Downtown and the county roads bring bigger jobs. An empty store building or a church building calls for a full commercial teardown. Local governments hire us for dilapidated and burnt houses, so condemned property is familiar ground. Our excavators are demolition-spec machines, and a dozer pushes the pile where the truck can reach it. Debris leaves on our own trucks as part of the job. Michelle Gumm said in her Google review: "Awesome Company. Contracted them to demolish a double wide on my property. They did it quickly and cleaned up great."
Newberry County is Piedmont ground. The soil is red clay, mostly Cecil series, sitting on rolling ridges and side slopes. Clay holds water and it shifts when it gets wet. That matters when a barn comes down or a house pad gets cut on a slope. We shape the ground so water runs off the site and away from the pad. The county ranks first in South Carolina for dairy, eggs, and timber. Those farm buildings age out, and we take down old poultry houses, dairy barns, and equipment sheds. Stumps and fence lines come out on the same trip.
Most property outside the city limits runs on well and septic. A new house on family land needs a septic system set to the approved permit design. Newberry County also wants a recorded plat and a 911 address with the zoning permit, so the paperwork comes first. Long drives off a county road need gravel and a crown that sheds water. We cut the drive in, lay the stone, and grade it so trucks can reach the house site. Irmo sits between here and our shop, and the Lexington area is a short run past it.
