Square footage sets the starting point, since a two-car pad takes far less concrete than a long drive. Thickness moves the number too, since a 5 inch slab with rebar costs more than a 4 inch pour. What sits under the slab counts as much as the concrete, and that part is easy to miss. Soft or wet dirt has to come out, and packed stone has to go back in its place. A slab that holds work trucks needs more depth and more steel than one that holds a car.
On a replacement, tear-out adds to the price, because the old concrete has to come up before we pour. Access changes the number as well, since a concrete truck needs room to back close to the forms. A job an hour down the road costs more than one a few miles from the shop. If the budget is tight, a stone drive costs less to put in than a poured one. Some jobs start bigger, and we take the whole building down before any new slab goes in. On a driveway replacement, the excavator breaks the old concrete up and it leaves on our own dump truck. We strip the soft dirt, bring in stone, and pack it down before the forms go in. The mesh or rebar goes down, we pour, screed it flat, and finish it with a broom for grip. Last comes the joints, cut in straight lines, and the site gets cleaned up behind us.
Most lots around here sit on red clay with just a thin layer of topsoil over the top. Clay holds water and drains slow, so the ground stays soft for days after a hard rain. Concrete poured on soft ground moves, and concrete that moves cracks in places you did not pick. We cut the soft dirt out, haul in stone, and run a compactor over it until it is tight. We also set the slope so water sheds off the slab instead of standing on it.
Older Midlands homes often have a thin driveway poured decades ago, and the edges are breaking apart. Newer lots out in the county often need a concrete patio out back, or a pad for a camper. We pour in Aiken and Irmo, and in the small towns between them and our shop. Summer heat and afternoon storms set the pour window, so we start early and watch the radar. If a new driveway ties into a public road, the road owner has to approve the tie-in first.
